About the event
Ten·e·brae
/ˈtenəbrē,ˈtenəˌbrī/
Noun, plural
(in the Roman Catholic Church) matins and lauds for the last three days of Holy Week, at which candles are successively extinguished.
Latin, literally ‘darkness’.
Tenebrae is a service of Western Christianity held during the Triduum, the three days preceding Easter Sunday. Like the “Lessons and Carols” services familiar at Christmas, Tenebrae consists of hymns, psalms, readings, and prayers, the ones proper to Lauds and Matins (from the Liturgy of the Hours) proper to the days of the Triduum.
