Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; cry out to the rock of our salvation.
MINISTRY OF MUSIC
The music ministry of the Church of St. Monica, St Elizabeth of Hungary, St Stephen of Hungary under the direction of John Zupan is an integral part of our expanding and vibrant parish.
Music is provided at four masses each weekend: Saturdays at 5:30 PM – cantor & organ, Sundays at 10:00 AM - cantor & organ, 12:00 Noon – featuring our Adult Choir, and a 5:00 PM mass –
featuring our Contemporary ensemble.
We view the participation of the music ministry as a reflection of beauty and spirituality, encouraging congregational participation in worship and singing. We promote performance of traditional and contemporary music, reflecting the liturgical needs of a diverse urban parish.
Our adult choir is all about encouraging musical companionship between its members. By singing together we foster a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect, and affection reflecting the values expressed in the gospel teachings. Choral experience is a plus but is not necessary. On the job training is offered.
Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. On Saturday afternoons we have an optional pickup rehearsal at 3:00 pm. We sing at the noon mass each Sunday as well as special liturgies throughout the liturgical year. At Christmas, Holy Week & Easter we are joined by the St. Monica Chamber Ensemble. Choir members are expected to attend at least 2 rehearsals per month.
THE CHILDREN'S CHOIR
The Children’s Choir program is committed to fostering excellent musicianship, knowledgeable participation in liturgy, and an active prayer life. This will include on-going music theory, ear training, sight singing, fundamentals of liturgy, and involvement in the prayer life of the community.
The Children’s Choir rehearses weekly in the chapel at St. Stephen of Hungary School [E82nd St] on Wednesdays from 4 pm – 5 pm. Our first rehearsal starts around the 3rdweek in September. The choir sings at the 5:30 pm Family Mass on the first Saturday of each month starting in October.
During Advent the choir sings for the 4 Saturdays of Advent plus Christmas Eve Mass. During Lent the choir sings for the five Sundays of Lent, Palm Sunday & Easter.
Although singing for the Sunday liturgy is primary, the Children’s Choir will also participate in our Christmas Concert, the Broadway Review and The Spring Concert. This will give the children an opportunity to perform music not typically heard in church.
Parents are a vital part of the Children’s Choir program. You are always welcome to observe rehearsals, but parents with small children are asked to remain in the back of the church during rehearsal. At various times helping hands are needed. If you can offer any time, please contact Mr. John Zupan.
THE CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE
The Contemporary Ensemble is a new ensemble here at STELMO. It is offered for our younger adults who are looking to praise God in song with more non-traditional tunes. As with our Adult Choir it encourages musical companionship between its members. By singing together we foster a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect, and affection reflecting the values expressed in the gospel teachings. Choral experience is a plus but is not necessary.
The ensemble meets before the 5 pm Mass Sunday afternoons at 4:15 pm. Instrumentalists welcomed. If you hare interested in joining please contact our Music Director, John Zupan at email@example.com
