MUSIC MINISTRY

Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; cry out to the rock of our salvation.

- Psalm 95:1

MINISTRY OF MUSIC

Please note that the adult Choir & Children's Choir are on break for the summer. We will be starting back up after Labor Day. Bothe choirs will be preparing for our Parish Feast Day on September 24th.  Have a safe and fun summer!

The music ministry of the Church of St. Monica, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Stephen of Hungary, under the direction of John Zupan, is an integral part of our expanding and vibrant parish.

We view the participation of the music ministry as a reflection of beauty and spirituality, encouraging congregational participation in worship and singing. We promote the performance of traditional and contemporary music, reflecting the liturgical needs of a diverse urban parish.

Music is provided at four masses each weekend:

Saturdays at 5:30 PM – cantor & organ

Sundays at 10:00 AM

1st & 3rd Sundays of the month – cantor & organ

2nd & 4th Sundays of the month – our Children’s Choir [October through mid-June]

12:00 Noon – featuring our Adult Choir

5:00 PM mass – featuring our Contemporary ensemble.

Our adult choir is all about encouraging musical companionship between its members. By singing together we foster a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect, and affection reflecting the values expressed in the gospel teachings. Choral experience is a plus but is not necessary. On the job choral training is offered.

THE SCHEDULE

Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. On Saturday afternoons we have an optional pickup rehearsal at 1:00 pm. We sing at the noon mass each Sunday as well as special liturgies throughout the liturgical year. At Christmas, Holy Week & Easter we are joined by the St. Monica Chamber Ensemble. Choir members are expected to attend at least 2 rehearsals per month.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The overall goal of the choir is to foster full and active participation in the Mass through song. Musically as a member of the choir, the children will learn the basic concepts of music theory, solfeggio, ear training and proper vocal production. Liturgically they will learn the fundamentals of the Mass more intimately as we journey through the church year from Advent through Easter.  It is our hope that their participation will lead to a fuller active prayer life in our parish community and beyond.  Children in the parish and school from grades 2 through 8 are welcome to join.

THE SCHEDULE

The Children’s Choir will rehearse weekly at the Church on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. – 5 p.m.   The choir will sing for the 5:30 p.m. Family Mass on the first Saturday of the month. In addition, the choir will also sing at the 10 am Family Friendly Mass on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month.  The children will perform at the Christmas Concert [Friday, Dec. 16th at 7:30 pm] and Christmas Eve Mass. [5:30 pm]

In the Spring, the Children's Choir will perform in two very special concerts - the Broadway Concert [Sunday, May 21st at 3 pm] and the Spring Concert: Songs for Peace 4 [Friday, June 2nd at 7:30 pm]

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Parents are a vital part of the Children’s Choir program. You are always welcome to observe rehearsals, but parents with small children are asked to remain in the back of the church during rehearsal. At various times helping hands are needed. If you can offer any time, please contact Mr. John Zupan.
